4. NPS/Tim Rains. The Two Medicine boat tour eliminates six miles round-trip off of your hike to Upper Two Medicine Lake, which offers unrivaled scenery and excellent fishing. Sinopah Mountain dominates the western terminus of the lake, while immediately to the north, Rising Wolf Mountain rises over 4,450 feet (1,360 m) above the lake. We drove to the Two Medicine area from Whitefish. Long drive for little payoff. Upper Two Medicine Lake. Two Medicine Lake with Rising Wolf Mtn. In the days prior to Going-to-the-Sun Road, this now off-the main path lake was among the most popular destinations in the park. An incredibly easy Two Medicine Lake hike is the boat ride to the end of the lake followed by a leisurely walk back along the north shore of the lake to the Two Medicine “General Store” and your transportation. Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park is one of three popular lakes close together and sharing the Two Medicine name. Two Medicine is an iconic, stand-alone in the park – both for its scenic views and history. However, our personal favorite campground is Two Medicine Lake. The views of the mountains from the site were incredible. The 2-mile long lake has a 100 site campground that serves visitors on a first-come-first-serve basis; the campground opens mid-April and closes in November. Two Medicine has plenty of excellent hiking right from the campground; Scenic Point, No Name Lake, and the route around Two Medicine Lake were highlights for us. The hike to Upper Two Medicine Lake is long, but easy with total elevation gain under 1,000 feet. Just going to the trailhead is a worthwhile experience.
With easy road access to the lake and surrounding mountains that will take your breath away, Two Medicine is not to be missed if you are visiting Glacier National Park! The hike to Rockwell Falls in Glacier National Park begins from the South Shore Trailhead at Two Medicine Lake. Stopped at the waterfall and walked through the woods and took pictures of the waterfall for about 45 minutes. Then drove to the road’s end at Upper Two Medicine Lake. We ended up spending our whole trip exploring the Two Medicine area - including hikes around the lake, renting a motor boat (kayaks and canoes also available) and taking a boat tour. Before the creation of the Going of the Sun Road, Two Medicine used to be the main tourist destination in the park. Before Going-to-the-Sun Road was constructed, Two Medicine was a primary destination for travelers arriving by train. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and nature trips. Two Medicine Lake is a large lake, and high winds should be a concern for those fishing from a car-top boat or a belly boat.

Hike to Upper Two Medicine Lake, around 12 miles round trip taking the South Shore or 6 miles if you take the boat across the lake and back. Explore remote banks, find a fishing hole or pack a picnic for an afternoon basking in the majestic views the Two Medicine Valley offers. The most popular: take the boat across and take a ranger-led hike to Twin Falls, two miles round trip if you return on the boat.
