Making Art Against the Odds: The Triumph of Edmonia Lewis by Kimberly Towne Introduction "If we want to understand a work of art, we should look at the time in which it was created, the circumstances that determined in style and art expression as well as the individual forces that led the artist … It was the middle of the 19th century, and Edmonia Lewis, part West Indian, part Chippewa, had the audacity to be an artist. BOOM! Edmonia Lewis, American sculptor whose Neoclassical works exploring religious and classical themes won contemporary praise and received renewed interest in the late 20th century. The sculptor Edmonia Lewis (1845-1907) spent much of her career in Rome, where she was part of a vibrant group of American expatriate women sculptors. This full-length statue is one of Lewis’ most well-known works. The first book in the series, from creators Jasmine Walls, Bex Glendining, and Kieran Quigley, spotlights artist Edmonia Lewis, the first widely-celebrated professional sculptor to come from African-American and Native American heritage. Orphaned at an early age, Lewis grew up in her mothers tribe where her life revolved around fishing, swimming, and making and selling crafts. She was orphaned Edmonia Lewis was the first sculptor of African American and Native American descent to achieve international recognition. In a world which did not encourage women of color, through incredible determination and sense of purpose, Lewis became the first professional African American and Native American sculptor, and often depicted African and Native peoples in her work. Her marble figurative sculptures portrayed both mythological and historical people, including Poor Cupid (1973), Hagar in the Wilderness (1868), and Forever Free (1867). Like her uncommissioned sculpture, Lewis was used to being a surprise arrival on the art scene. But there is nothing common about the life of Edmonia Lewis (1845-1909). Edmonia Lewis was an American sculptor in the 19th century who worked in a Neoclassical style.
