The ones I've cut (non-bmw), have all ended up with 1 to 1 1/2 active coils cut (assuming its not the prius type spring that has 3 active coils total).
How many coils should I cut off it to make it lower, and how many can I cut off before it's MJG-spec scraping on the floor and nearly unuseable? However, with the E30, the stock springs are very weak compared to anything offered more recently and you almost certainly need stiffer springs just to keep the suspension from hitting the bump stops over every dip in the road. What I did was cut the top of the spring then welded the bottom pigtail too the mount so the spring didn't pop out.
