On 1 July 2019, the new Aged Care Quality Standards came into effect and the Royal Commission have started monitoring and assessing the quality of care and services being delivered by care providers. Facilities must be able to provide evidence of their compliance with eight individual standards, covering everything from personal and clinical care to consumer dignity and choice. There will be flexibility in the way the new Standards are applied to different services, as outlined in the Application of Aged Care Quality Standards by Service Type. 1.

The number one take away from the new aged care standards is that aged care should focus on the consumer: ultimately, aged care providers are now legally required to ensure that each individual receives the best care available to them. The Aged Care Quality Standards focus on quality outcomes for consumers, making it easier for consumers, their families, carers and representatives to understand what to expect from services. Organisations providing Commonwealth subsidised aged care services are required to comply with the Aged Care Quality Standards (Quality Standards). You can choose which module you would like to start first, and you are not required to do these in any particular order. There is guidance and resources available for providers to support the Aged Care Quality Standards.
